Free introductory workshop with Mia
WOMENS’ FIRE CHOIR
Wednesday March 8th
International Womens’ Day
7:00 – 8:15 p.m.
Women have always sung together, from the beginning of time.
And in times like these, we women need to keep singing together!
Come to a free introductory evening to experience the Women’s Fire Choir,
a new community non-auditioned choir for women starting up in Montclair.
Woman’s Fire Choir is a singing sisterhood, a place where we can blend our voices together in harmony to nourish our spirits, keep our hearts open and our determination strong. Where we sing songs about our hopes and dreams, what we love and value, and the world we want to create. All women are welcome, as are singers of every level of experience! Come ready to learn music with your whole being – mind, body and spirit – and contribute to the joy and positivity of our supportive vocal community.
At the workshop, you’ll meet Mia, the director, warm up your voice with fun and easy guided exercises, and get a taste of the choir by coming together with other women to sing chants, songs and rounds in three and four part harmony. There will be time to ask questions, get to know one another and share your dreams and desires for a women’s choir here in town.
The choir will sing songs composed by women and about women, songs from the Civil Rights Movement, spirituals, chants, rounds and folk music from the U.S. and around the world. We will learn songs by ear and from written choral arrangements. We will perform in our community and donate the proceeds of our performances to causes and organizations that we as a group choose together to support.
Mia is a jazz vocalist who loves getting people singing! Over the last thirty years she has coached choirs and directed vocal ensembles, led community song circles and taught voice and vocal improvisation in churches, synagogues, high schools, colleges and community music schools. Mia loves to empower people to find their voice, free their creative spirit and experience a deep feeling of community through singing. She was inspired by the recent Womens’ Marches to create the Womens’ Fire Choir here in Montclair.
