Neil Baldwin was born in New York City and attended the Horace Mann School. He was a Visiting Student at the University of Manchester, England, and received his B.A. in English from the University of Rochester and his Ph.D. in Modern American Poetry from the State University of New York at Buffalo. His doctoral dissertation, a descriptive catalogue of the manuscripts and letters of William Carlos Williams in the collections of SUNY/Buffalo and Yale University (Preface by Robert Creeley), was published by G. K. Hall and Company, Boston, in 1978. In September, 2006, Neil Baldwin joined the faculty of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University, where he serves as the Distinguished Visiting Professor of History. Neil Baldwin is co-director of the NYU Biography Seminar, serves on the program committee for the 2008 annual meeting of the Organization of American Historians, and is a member of the Writers Guild of America (East), the National Arts Club literary committee, and PEN American Center.
